If you’re a great dog lover, you might want to consider entering your furry friend into a dog show or two. Not only will it bring you closer to your canine companion, but it can be a fun and rewarding pastime. The question is, what exactly are dog shows and how do you get involved?
The AKC
The American Kennel Club, also known as the AKC, holds a number of dog shows each year. With the accent being on conformation, AKC dog shows are competitive events that can be fun and exciting.
Different Types of Dog Shows
There are two different types of AKC dog shows -- all breed events and specialty events. With all breed events, any breed can enter the dog show. With specialty events, only a certain breed may enter the competition.
Requirements
If you want to enter your dog into one of the AKC dog shows, your dog must be registered with the AKC, must be 6 months of age or older, must not be spayed or neutered and must meet the breed’s individual requirements.
If your dog doesn’t meet the AKC requirements, there may be a number of other local dog shows that you might consider entering your pet in.
