The Fun of Making a Family Tree
Create a Family Tree for a Fun and Informative Project
Making a family tree can be a fun project for you and your family. It can be a great project if you have children too. A family tree can be your link to the past. So many people tend to forget where they came from, and creating a family tree can be a tangible way to get to know your ancestors who lived and died before you were even born.
Getting Started
Creating a family tree is usually pretty easy to start with. It can get difficult depending on how large your family is and how much information you have on older relatives and deceased ancestors. Some people don’t know much beyond a few generations. There are easy ways to research your family history online, but you can simply begin your family tree by filling in what you already know about your family.
Use the Tools Available to You
There are free software programs available online that can help you create a family tree. For now, you can simply make a written family tree consisting of what you already know. For many families, it is easy to simply begin listing their parents names and each of their four grandparents. Fortunately, I have a cousin who loves genealogy, and he has done a lot of research on my family. I have information on my ancestors back about eight generations.
If your ancestors only came to the U.S. in the 1800s or 1900s, it can be much harder to get records from other countries, and you will have to rely on what your family members have passed down throughout the generations unless you have the time or desire to take up genealogy as a pastime.
An Ongoing Project
Remember that a family tree is never quite done. Sure you can create a concise family tree for your child to share for a school assignment, but the more you learn about your family’s past, the more you will have to add to your family tree.
